The significance of design in terms of ensuring competitiveness and profitability was behind the establishment of the Grand Award of Design, which the employer organisation Teknikföretagen launched in 2003. The annual award is presented in partnership with the Swedish Industrial Design Foundation and the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design (Svensk Form) to draw attention to commercial successes that have been facilitated by integrated and consistent design efforts.

Which entries may be submitted?

Products, product ranges and services from Swedish companies and their internal or external design suppliers may be entered for the Grand Award of Design competition. They are assessed on their form and function, with the crucial component being the extent to which a design has laid the foundation for long-term commercial success. Other important elements include user perspective, design strategy, level of innovation, news value, adaption to production, ergonomics and environmental requirements.

How does the competition work?

Anyone is allowed to nominate an entry for the Grand Award of Design from November to 31 January. Based on the nominations received, it is then the job of the Grand Award of Design’s eminent jury to select five finalists and finally, at a gala in the beginning of May, to announce the winner of Teknikföretagen’s Grand Award of Design. Aside from the winner selected by the jury, the public’s favourite is selected by means of a vote that opens at the end of April.

What is the award for the winning entry?

The winner of the Grand Award of Design is awarded a cash prize of SEK 250,000, which goes to the supplier of the design. Half of the money can be used as the designer wishes, while the other half is donated to research projects in the field of design. The public’s favourite and all the finalists each win SEK 25,000.
